United States President Donald Trump has escalated his long‑running feud with Representative Ilhan Omar, asserting without evidence that the Department of Justice and members of Congress are investigating the Minnesota Democrat’s personal wealth.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump alleged that Omar arrived in the United States from Somalia “with NOTHING” and is now “reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars,” suggesting that federal authorities are scrutinizing how she accumulated her assets. The Justice Department has not announced any such investigation, and congressional leaders have not confirmed Trump’s claim.
Public financial disclosures reviewed by outlets including the Wall Street Journal and Politico show a far smaller range. Omar’s most recent filing reports combined assets for her and her husband estimated between $6 million and $30 million, much of it tied to her spouse’s business interests and investment holdings. Ethics experts note that congressional disclosure forms provide broad ranges rather than precise valuations, making it difficult to pin down an exact net worth.
Omar responded swiftly on X, accusing Trump of fabricating scandals to distract from his own political and legal troubles. “Trump, your support is collapsing and you’re panicking,” she wrote, calling his assertions “lies and conspiracy theories” and saying that years of scrutiny of her finances have produced no evidence of wrongdoing.
The clash is the latest chapter in a bitter, years‑long confrontation. Omar, the first Somali American and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress, has frequently been a target of Trump’s rallies and social media posts since she entered the House in 2019. He has repeatedly questioned her loyalty, attacked her refugee background and, more recently, suggested she should be jailed or deported to Somalia.
Trump has also linked Omar to a high‑profile welfare fraud scandal in Minnesota, accusing Somali American communities of widespread abuse of public funds. State and federal investigators have charged dozens of individuals in connection with the scheme, but have not implicated Omar.
The president’s latest remarks come amid heightened tensions between Minnesota officials and the federal government over immigration enforcement and ICE operations, with community leaders warning that Trump’s rhetoric is fueling anti‑Somali sentiment and putting Muslim and refugee communities at greater risk of harassment and violence.
