Pain Of The Past - 7 months ago

Sweats dripped down Nick's face like drops of water from a leaking faucet. His trembling arms were raised above his head, signifying that he was harmless and helpless. Next to him was the worst person he wished he never met. Both were wearing a long white coat, big glasses and similar faces that showed the fear and unfortunate possibility of what Rosabella would do.

Rosabella, a woman of unpredictable nature, pointed a shotgun at them. Strands of her long black hair covered the menacing look in her eyes. One had to prove who was the real doctor and the other an imposter.

“So,” She began with a smirk. “Which of you is the real doctor?”

“I am.” Both men shouted and then looked at each other.

"Let's settle it this way.” Rosabella said. “He who answers correctly keeps his life. And I don't care who it is anyway.”

“Please.” Nick begged. “Don't do this. You know that I'm the one!”

But Rosa blocked one ear with her finger. “Not listening!” Then laughed. “One question that everyone thinks they know but get wrong anyhow. How many sons did I have?”

“You had one.” Nick answered.

“Two!” Ross yelled.

Rosa turned to face a younger man who had been sitting helplessly on the floor all the while. The man, Victor, shook his head in protest. His eyes were wide with fear.

Rosa ignored it and faced Nick with an unsettling smile.

“Wrong answer.” And aimed to shoot him.

“If you take the law of consideration, Manasseh doesn't consider you his mother. So, you had one. And that one is dead!”

A heavy silence filled the underground basement of the hospital. Rosabella, Victor and Ross looked at Nick with shock and confusion.

“That one was your first son, Issachar.” Nick explained. “And he was in a terrible condition. Just barely conscious after the explosion at the palace. Where you should have been.”

Rosa's heart dropped. “What are you trying to say?’

“Your husband didn't want to tell you because of your pregnancy at that time. So, they had to find a doctor. Me. But we didn't understand the body of a Guragi who was special blooded. Issa's body couldn't carry our medicines.”

“Shut up!” Rosa didn't want to listen to him anymore.

But Nick went on, moving closer while lowering his arms. “He kept calling you."

Rosa took a few steps back. Every breath she took felt like suffocation. Her eyes became filled with a boiling anger that she had kept cool for years. She looked at him, as though pleading for him to stop. But Nick continued.

“He died two days later. When you walked into that room, you saw me. Infact, you recognized me on my first day in Sudawa but pretended not to.” He said. His arms were no longer raised. “That's why you have been leaving all doctors to die. Not because of me anymore but because the white coat represent the people your husband believed could save your son but didn't.”

“Stop talking.” Rosa said, trying to sound intimidating but instead sounded more at the edge of crying.

Nick looked her dead in the eye. “Kill me and you will be happy knowing that you have avenged your son”

Rosa eyed him to find fear but nothing showed.

Don't do it, please.” Victor begged. “Your husband was also responsible. So, kill him!”

Flashbacks of her son's dying image brought back a familiar but hated feeling she had that time: Hopelessness.

“Do it, Rosa!” Nick yelled.

“Yes.” Ross agreed. “Kill him!”

With a glint in her eyes, Rosa rapidly shot it. Each covered her screams of guilt and cries for a never found redemption.

“No! Dad!” Victor cried.

But lying on the floor in his puddle of blood was Doctor Ross. Within seconds, he was dead.

Victor rushed to a shaken Nick and hugged him. Both cried tears of relief.

“What happened?” Victor asked.

“She just realized that chasing revenge leaves you trying to figure out what wasn't your fault but someone else. And it's better to let life handle it."

Nick watched as Rosa climbed the last step and disappeared into the darkness. And into her own pain.
