Nigeria's music legend, Onyeka Onwenu, known as the 'Elegant Stallion,' has died at the age of 72. Onwenu reportedly collapsed after performing at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okolie, CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, on Tuesday. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album, ‘For the Love of You,’ in 1981. She became famous for her hit songs like ‘One Love,’ ‘Ekwe,’ ‘You and I,’ and ‘Bia Nulu.’ Onwenu also made her mark as an actress, starring in Nollywood films such as ‘Mothers-in-Law,’ ‘Half of a Yellow Sun,’ and ‘The Tyrant,’ earning numerous awards for her contributions to music and film.
Educated in the U.S., Onwenu held a degree in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College and a master’s in Media Studies from the New School for Social Research. She began her media career with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in the early 1980s, producing and presenting ‘The Onyeka Onwenu Show.’
Onwenu also had a notable political career, serving as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later as director-general of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016. She was awarded the National Honours of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011 for her contributions to Nigerian society.
Her sudden death has left her fans and the Nigerian entertainment industry in shock. Onyeka Onwenu will be remembered for her powerful voice, influential music, and significant contributions to both entertainment and public service in Nigeria.
