The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken a major step forward for women’s football by expanding the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from 12 to 16 teams for its 2026 edition. Set to take place in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026, this move aims to elevate female athletes and provide more opportunities for African nations to showcase their talent on a major stage.
With qualification already complete, CAF has approved the selection of four additional teams—Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, and Egypt—to join the previously qualified nations, including Morocco, Zambia, and Tanzania. Each team brings renewed hope and excitement, representing a chance for more women to shine, inspire, and build the competitive spirit of the tournament. The expansion is expected to strengthen women’s football by broadening participation and improving player experience across the continent.
The 2026 WAFCON will also serve as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, heightening its significance. Beyond competing for continental glory, teams will be battling for places on the global stage. This landmark growth signals a bright future—laying foundations for the next generation of African female athletes and marking a bold new chapter for women’s football across the continent.
