Real Madrid Win Race To Sign Cucurella From Chelsea In £51.8m Deal - Yesterday

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8m, securing one of the most coveted left-backs in European football and delivering an early statement of intent under new head coach Jose Mourinho.

The agreement is structured at £47.5m up front with a further £4.3m in performance-related add-ons. Cucurella has signed a six-year contract, tying him to the Bernabeu for the prime of his career and underlining Madrid’s long-term faith in the 27-year-old.

Cucurella leaves Chelsea four years after arriving from Brighton in a £63m move. During his time at Stamford Bridge he made 163 appearances and helped the club lift both the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup, becoming a regular presence on the left flank in a period of heavy squad turnover.

The transfer is a setback for incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who inherits a squad already short on experienced leaders. Cucurella was not listed among the club’s “untouchable” core, headed by Cole Palmer and captain Reece James, but his departure removes a proven option in a key position. Netherlands international Jorrel Hato, signed from Ajax for £37m last summer, is now in contention to become first-choice left-back, though Chelsea are expected to explore further reinforcements.

For Real Madrid, Cucurella was a priority target for Mourinho, who pushed hard to secure a dynamic, aggressive full-back capable of operating both in a back four and as a wing-back. Madrid saw off strong interest from Barcelona and Manchester City, while Atletico Madrid also monitored the situation. The player’s desire to return to Spain and represent Madrid proved decisive.

Cucurella, a former Barcelona academy product, is currently on international duty with Spain at the World Cup, where he is expected to feature prominently. His move comes after a turbulent spell at Chelsea in which he publicly questioned the club’s transfer strategy and the decision to part company with coach Enzo Maresca, comments that underlined growing tension behind the scenes.

Chelsea issued a brief farewell message thanking Cucurella for his contribution and wishing him success in the next stage of his career. Madrid, meanwhile, add him to an already ambitious recruitment drive under Mourinho, following deals for Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva, as they reshape the squad for a new era.
