Green chases brown
Across endless plains
Each step measured, purposeful
Life springs beneath his feet
As grasses bow in welcome
His path blooms wild:
Poppies flame through emerald,
Daisies dot like fallen stars,
Dandelions smile gold at dawn
While lupines dance in morning dew
Where his sweat falls,
Springs burst forth unbidden
Dead earth transforms
Into vibrant tapestries
Of moss and tender shoots
Each footprint births life:
A fern unfurls its secret scroll
Grass pierces stone
Moss creeps like green fire
Nature answers his silent call
Through scorched dunes he trudges
Skin cracked like ancient pottery
Yet forward still, ever forward
Over sands that sear his soles
Time has carved its story
In the valleys of his face
Once-straight shoulders bow
Under the weight of years
His mission burns fiercer
Than the merciless sun above
"The world needs green," he whispers
To winds that steal his words
His staff now bears his weight
As bones protest each step
Earth whispers back,
Gentle as a mother's touch
“Rest here awhile, old friend”
But rest brings doubt
And doubt brings fear
For the first time
He turns to see his life's work
Horror freezes his heart
Behind him, just beyond sight
A rabbit, fat and fierce
Devours his beloved garden
Leaving desert in its wake
All his years of toil
Undone by hungry innocence
As he stumbles forward,
The creature grows ever larger
Feasting on his legacy of green
The gap shrinks
Between creator and destroyer
In this eternal race
Where hope leads despair
By just a single step
