If I asked you what is keeping you from healing, what would your answer be?
Would you say it is the people who hurt you?
The childhood you wish you had?
The betrayal you never saw coming?
The heartbreak that changed everything?
Those things absolutely leave wounds.
But today, I want to talk about something much quieter.
Something many of us do every single day without realizing it.
We run.
Not with our legs.
With our emotions.
The truth is, many people are not avoiding healing because they do not want it.
They are avoiding the feelings that healing requires.
It is easier to stay busy than to sit with grief.
It is easier to scroll endlessly through social media than to admit you feel lonely.
It is easier to help everyone else than to ask yourself,
"How am I really doing?"
Avoidance feels like relief.
But it is only temporary.
Imagine having a wound on your arm.
Instead of cleaning it, you cover it with a jacket every day.
From the outside, no one sees it.
But underneath, the wound is still there.
That is what emotional avoidance does.
Ignoring pain does not remove it.
It simply hides it.
Eventually, hidden pain begins showing up in different ways.
It becomes anger.
Anxiety.
Burnout.
People-pleasing.
Overthinking.
Emotional numbness.
Difficulty trusting others.
Fear of commitment.
The pain never disappeared.
It simply changed its appearance.
Healing begins the day you stop pretending you are okay when you are not.
It begins the day you stop saying,
"I am over it,"
when your heart is still carrying it.
It begins the day you allow yourself to cry without feeling weak.
The day you ask for help without feeling like a burden.
The day you admit,
"That experience hurt me."
Honesty is where healing starts.
Not perfection.
Not pretending.
Honesty.
This does not mean living in the past.
It means acknowledging it.
Because you cannot heal what you refuse to face.
Facing your pain is not about reopening old wounds.
It is about finally cleaning them.
That process is uncomfortable.
Some days you will cry.
Some days you will feel angry.
Some days you will question everything.
That does not mean healing is not working.
It often means healing has finally begun.
There is something incredibly freeing about no longer carrying the pressure to appear strong all the time.
You begin breathing differently.
Sleeping differently.
Living differently.
Not because your past disappeared.
But because it no longer controls every decision you make.
Healing is not the absence of pain.
It is learning that pain no longer has to be in charge.
So what is the one thing you need to stop doing?
Stop running.
Stop pretending.
Stop suppressing.
Stop convincing yourself that if you ignore your emotions long enough, they will disappear.
They will not.
But they can be healed.
One honest conversation.
One journal entry.
One prayer.
One therapy session.
One courageous step at a time.
The day you stop running from yourself...
is often the day your healing truly begins.
