Frank Edoho Threatens Legal Action Against X User For Defamatory Comment - 1wk ago

Media personality and game show host Frank Edoho has threatened legal action against an X user who published a string of defamatory allegations about him, including a false claim that he is living with HIV.

The controversy began after Edoho, best known as the host of the Nigerian edition of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” promoted a betting platform on his social media page. The endorsement drew criticism from some users, but one account escalated the backlash into outright defamation.

In a post that quickly drew attention, the user described Edoho as “a nuisance to the society” and went on to accuse him of being a “wife beater,” a “serial husband,” and an “HIV carrier” who had allegedly infected multiple women. The user further claimed that Edoho had “about a dozen children he couldn’t take care of” and suggested he would accept any offer “to buy antiretroviral drug.”

The allegations, presented without evidence, sparked outrage among Edoho’s supporters, who condemned the post as reckless and malicious. Many pointed out that such claims, especially about a person’s health status, are not only unethical but potentially actionable under Nigeria’s defamation and cybercrime laws.

Edoho responded directly to the user in a strongly worded post, making it clear he intended to pursue the matter beyond social media. “When I track you and arrest you and take you to court, you’ll bring people to beg for you but I won’t budge,” he wrote. “I’ll take the little you have from you and I will not relent. Tweet another sentence and see.”

His reaction has reignited debate about online accountability and the growing trend of weaponizing social media platforms to spread unverified and damaging claims about public figures. Legal experts frequently warn that anonymity on social media does not shield users from liability, as law enforcement and private investigators can often trace accounts back to their operators.

While Edoho has not yet announced a formal lawsuit, his public vow to “track” and “arrest” the user signals a readiness to make an example of the case. The incident underscores the increasing willingness of Nigerian celebrities and media personalities to challenge defamatory content in court rather than simply ignore or block offending accounts.
