The United States government has issued a security alert to its citizens in Nigeria as tensions escalate sharply following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and retaliatory attacks across the Middle East.
In a public advisory, the US authorities urged Americans living in or travelling through Nigeria to maintain a high level of vigilance, monitor local and international news, and be prepared for rapid changes in the security environment linked to the confrontation with Tehran.
The alert followed the launch of US combat operations against Iranian targets and reports from Iranian state and local media that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in airstrikes attributed to the United States and Israel. Several senior Iranian officials were also reported dead, fuelling fears of a wider regional conflict.
US officials warned that Americans worldwide, particularly in regions with a history of Iranian-linked activity or proxy groups, could face elevated risks. While Nigeria is far from the immediate theatre of conflict, Western diplomatic missions have long treated it as a country where global tensions can have local security implications, including the possibility of demonstrations near embassies, consulates, or other Western-linked facilities.
The advisory cautioned that travel plans could be disrupted by periodic airspace closures and shifting security conditions. US citizens were encouraged to reconsider non-essential movements, avoid large gatherings and protests, and keep a low profile.
The State Department urged Americans to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which allows embassies to send targeted security messages and facilitates contact in emergencies. Citizens were also directed to follow official security update channels for real-time guidance.
Iran has reportedly responded to the strikes by launching multiple missiles at US military facilities in Gulf countries, including bases in Saudi Arabia, and has vowed to avenge the deaths of its leaders. The exchanges have raised concerns among analysts that US interests and nationals worldwide could become targets for retaliation or opportunistic attacks.
In a televised address as the confrontation unfolded, US President Donald Trump declared his determination to dismantle the Iranian leadership structure and called on Iranians to seize control of their government once military operations conclude.
For Americans in Nigeria, the latest alert underscores how distant geopolitical flashpoints can quickly reshape local risk calculations, prompting renewed emphasis on personal security and close attention to official guidance.
