Konaté Sees “Big Chance” He Will Stay At Liverpool - 19 hours ago

Ibrahima Konaté believes there is a “big chance” he will remain at Liverpool beyond this season, with the defender close to signing a new contract that would end mounting speculation over his future.

The France international’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the campaign, prompting interest from several leading European clubs. Despite links to Real Madrid and others, Konaté has made clear his preference is to continue his career at Anfield.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-1 Merseyside derby win over Everton, the 26-year-old revealed that negotiations with the club have been ongoing for months and are now approaching a conclusion.

“There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement,” Konaté said. “For sure there is a big chance I’m here next season. This is what I always wanted.”

He compared his situation to that of senior teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, whose own renewals were also drawn-out affairs. Konaté suggested Liverpool’s hierarchy prefers to take its time over major contracts, even when both sides are keen to continue.

Beyond the negotiations, Konaté spoke with emotion about his bond with Liverpool and the people around the club. He described Anfield as more than just a workplace, highlighting the daily relationships that have shaped his attachment to Merseyside.

“Not only with the fans, especially with the people who work at the club, every single person who works there,” he said. “I take it in my heart like my family. It’s such an amazing club and amazing family. That’s why we have to give our all on the pitch, for them, for the fans, for everyone in the city. This club means so much to me.”

This season has tested that resolve. Konaté has battled inconsistency on the field and dealt with the death of his father in January. Liverpool’s title defence has faltered, leaving Champions League qualification as the primary target.

Yet Konaté insists that difficult campaigns are part of the club’s broader story and can fuel future success. He believes the struggles of this year will become a defining chapter in his own journey, one he expects to continue in a Liverpool shirt.
