The Day I Nearly Joined The School Choir By Mistake - 1 month ago

See ehn, university life will humble you if you don’t walk carefully.

Back in my 200 level, I was just trying to mind my business and pass “Statistics for the Confused.” One afternoon, my friend Bola told me, “Ayomide, come let’s go for fellowship. You’ll enjoy it  they have snacks.”

My brain only heard “snacks.”

So I followed her. We got there, people were singing like angels. I sat quietly at the back, waiting for biscuits or puff puff. Next thing, one tall brother with a deep voice came to our row and said, “We’re calling for new choir members today. The Spirit is leading me to you, sister in yellow.”

Guess who wore yellow that day? 😭

Before I could explain that the only time I sing is in the bathroom when NEPA takes light, everyone started clapping. Bola too joined them! “Yes, she can sing very well!” she said betrayal of the highest order.

Long story short, they handed me a mic.

The pianist started playing “Oceans.” My throat dried up. I hummed nonsense until the keyboardist stopped and said, “Sister, maybe the Spirit is still warming up.”

That’s how I dropped the mic, smiled politely, and disappeared from that fellowship forever.
