New Students Of The Faculty Of Communication And Media Studies Oriented At Kaduna State University - 1wk ago

Fresh students of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at Kaduna State University have been urged to cultivate curiosity, discipline, and responsible conduct as essential foundations for success in their academic journey.

The advice was given during an orientation programme organised by the Faculty of Communication and Media Student  Association Kaduna State University Chapter on 26 February 2026 at the university’s Multipurpose Hall.

Speakers at the event emphasised that asking questions, maintaining discipline, and making effective use of available academic facilities are critical habits for learning and professional development.

Welcoming the students formally into the faculty, the Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Prof. Hadiza Isa Wada noted that the discipline of mass communication is designed to groom students into professional communicators capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

She informed the freshers that the faculty now operates through  three departments: Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies and Broadcasting, and advised them to seek guidance from lecturers whenever necessary.

Also speaking the Director Digital Divide and Social Informatics and former Dean of the faculty, Prof. Ayodele Joseph cautioned the students against treating the university environment as a platform for social display.
He advised them to remain focused on their academic responsibilities, attend lectures regularly, submit assignments promptly, and seek guidance from their level coordinators when needed.

In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. M. K. Dauda explained the role of the Student Affairs Division as the bridge between students and university management. He encouraged the freshers to channel their concerns through the appropriate units within the division, which are designed to address specific student issues.

Prof. Dauda congratulated the students for securing admission into the university and urged them to participate in extracurricular activities while familiarising themselves with the university’s student handbook, which outlines institutional rules and expectations.

Representing the University Librarian, Dr. Babangida Dangani, Dr. Khali Allahmagani encouraged the students to take advantage of the university library’s vast digital resources, which provide access to billions of e-books and academic materials.
She explained that each registered student is permitted to borrow two books at a time and reminded them that library clearance is a mandatory requirement before graduation.

The Level Coordinator of the faculty, Mr. Timileyin Paul also urged the freshers to cultivate positive relationships with both their peers and lecturers. He advised them to discard secondary school habits, associate with responsible colleagues, avoid examination malpractice, and ensure that their course registration is properly approved.

The Social Director of the association, Anas Alhassan, encouraged the freshers to take their studies seriously and avoid behaviours that could jeopardise their academic future. He also advised them to maximise the faculty’s practical learning facilities, including the library, photography studio, and campus radio station.

The Head of the Guidance and Counselling Unit in the faculty, Mrs. Comfort John stressed that curiosity is a hallmark of learning, urging students not to hesitate in asking questions whenever they encounter difficulties in their studies.She

 also reminded them that discipline remains central to academic success, cautioning against fighting, drug abuse, and other forms of misconduct. She further encouraged the students to set clear academic goals, manage their time effectively, maintain personal hygiene, and attend lectures fully prepared.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the President of the Association of Students of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Umar Ibrahim Ibrahim, appreciated the management and staff for their support and encouraged the students to remain focused on completing their studies successfully and within the stipulated time.

The orientation programme also featured spoken word performances and entertainment by students, adding a creative touch to the formal proceedings.
