Governor Peter Mbah Launches Demolition of Ogbete Market, Sparking Mixed Reactions

On Friday, May 10th, the Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, commenced the demolition of Ogbete Market as part of a grand plan to construct ultra modern park with the aim to enhance transportation network within and across the state.

 While some traders successfully evacuated their goods and property prior to the demolition, others were caught off guard, resulting in significant losses.

The demolition has elicited diverse reactions from the public, with some expressing indifference, others grumbling in discontent, and a few outrightly condemning the action. An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, lamented that the demolition was too sudden, leaving some traders without sufficient time to evacuate their property. "This is a huge financial blow to the affected individuals, and it's heartbreaking to see their livelihoods destroyed," she said.

However, another eyewitness offered a contrasting perspective, pointing out that the government had issued evacuation notices weeks prior to the demolition and even provided compensation to affected individuals and institutions . "Those who failed to evacuate their property despite the notices only have themselves to blame," she argued.
