Messi, Miami Honoured By Trump At White House - 1wk ago

Inter Miami’s first MLS Cup title earned the club a place in one of American sport’s most enduring rituals: a championship visit to the White House, where Lionel Messi was the unmistakable centre of attention.

The team gathered in the East Room as President Donald Trump welcomed players, staff and club executives, praising what he called “truly talented people.” Standing beside Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas and head coach Javier Mascherano, Messi presented Trump with a pink Miami soccer ball, while Mas added a club jersey and a watch to the presidential haul.

It was Messi’s inaugural visit to the White House, a milestone in a U.S. chapter of his career that began when he joined Miami in 2023. The reception followed his second straight MLS MVP season and Miami’s 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Fort Lauderdale, a win that secured the 2025 MLS Cup and confirmed the club’s rapid ascent.

Trump used the moment to underline Messi’s unique burden of expectation. “You came in and you won, and that’s something very hard to do,” he said, noting that the Argentine star was “sort of expected to win, but almost nobody wins.” The president also recalled his son’s excitement at Messi’s presence and drew a parallel with Cristiano Ronaldo, who had attended a White House dinner months earlier.

The room was filled with star power beyond Messi. Luis Suárez, Tadeo Allende and Rodrigo De Paul joined their captain on stage, while MLS commissioner Don Garber, retired baseball great Alex Rodriguez and senior U.S. officials looked on. After the formal remarks, Trump invited the squad to continue the celebration in the Oval Office.

Mas used his time at the podium to frame Miami’s success as a turning point for the sport in the United States. He argued that the club had “changed the culture of football” in the country and insisted MLS could stand alongside the world’s top leagues. With David Beckham also among the ownership group, Mas said the title and the visit were the product of an organisation that “dared to dream.”

The ceremony extended a tradition that has seen MLS champions from D.C. United to the LA Galaxy honoured in Washington, but this edition carried a singular distinction: for the first time, the White House welcomed Lionel Messi as a league champion on American soil.
