Context Matters. Calm Down, It’s Not What You Think!
There was this day on campus I’ll never forget.
I was walking past one of the lecture halls when I overheard a guy say, “Slap her joor, she deserves it!”
Ah. My steps slowed immediately. My blood started boiling.
Who are they slapping? Why are they sounding so bold about it in public? I turned sharply ready to cause small holy commotion, lol.. only to realize it was a group of Theatre Arts students rehearsing a drama.
Nawao! 🤦🏾♀️
See me almost turning into UNN’s self-appointed justice warrior over a script! Hai... All because I didn’t have the full story. All because I walked in halfway.
That day taught me a big lesson that context is everything.
We do this a lot, don’t we?
We quote one Bible verse and use it to attack people, forgetting there are verses before and after.
We see one clip on social media and form opinions without asking what happened before the camera started rolling.
Someone tells us, “She said this” and we’re already fuming without hearing the full conversation.
A friend replies your message with “okay” and you conclude they’re angry but they’re probably just tired or distracted.
Abi na lie?
Even in life, we do this to people.
We look at someone’s current state. How they dress, talk, act and start writing our own version of their story.
We judge someone’s silence, someone’s reaction, someone’s choices, without knowing the background.
But you see, people are like stories—you can’t understand a person if you only read one sentence.
Context gives clarity. It helps us see the full picture.
And if we start giving each other more grace, asking questions, and listening deeper, we’ll stop misjudging and start understanding.
You grab?
So next time you catch yourself reacting too fast, just pause and ask:
“Do I know the full story?”
Because the truth is, you might not be angry oo.. you might just be uninformed.
If this hit you even a little, share it with someone who needs the reminder.
The world could use more understanding.
