Google’s Gemini app has crossed a major threshold, surpassing 750 million monthly active users and underscoring how quickly the company’s flagship AI assistant is moving into the mainstream. The figure, disclosed in Alphabet’s latest quarterly earnings, reflects a steep climb from the 650 million users reported just one quarter earlier.
The surge cements Gemini as one of the most widely used consumer AI products in the world. It now sits in a tight race with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which industry estimates place at roughly 810 million monthly active users, and ahead of Meta’s AI assistant, which has reported nearly 500 million users. For Google, long seen as playing catch-up in generative AI, the numbers offer tangible evidence that its strategy is starting to resonate with consumers.
A key catalyst has been the rollout of Gemini 3, Google’s latest and most capable model, which powers the Gemini app in what the company calls AI mode. The model is designed to deliver more context-aware, conversational responses and handle complex, multi-step tasks, from drafting documents and analyzing data to generating images and code. Google executives say those improvements are translating directly into higher engagement and retention.
CEO Sundar Pichai described Gemini 3 as a “major milestone” for the company, noting that Google’s first-party AI models now process more than 10 billion tokens per minute through direct API usage. That level of throughput highlights how deeply Gemini is being woven into both consumer products and enterprise workflows, from search and productivity tools to developer platforms.
Google is also pushing hard on pricing and accessibility. The company recently introduced Google AI Plus, a lower-cost subscription at $7.99 per month aimed at users who want more powerful features without committing to premium enterprise tiers. While the new plan launched too late to affect the latest user figures, executives say it is central to a strategy that blends a robust free tier with scalable paid offerings.
Gemini’s rapid ascent comes as Alphabet’s broader AI ambitions reshape its business. The company has surpassed $400 billion in annual revenue, crediting much of that momentum to demand for AI infrastructure and tools, including its new Ironwood TPU accelerator designed to compete with Nvidia’s dominance in AI chips. With Gemini now serving hundreds of millions of people each month, Google is signaling that its future growth will be inseparable from the evolution of its AI ecosystem.
