The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission for formally recognising the Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu–led Caretaker National Working Committee of the party.
The recognition, the party noted, aligns with a recent judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which nullified a rival PDP convention and clarified the status of the party’s national leadership.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Chief Jude Udeachara, the Abia PDP said INEC’s decision was reflected in the commission’s invitation to the Mohammed and Anyanwu–led caretaker committee to participate in a quarterly strategic engagement with political party leaders.
The party described the move as a clear affirmation of INEC’s respect for the rule of law, equity, justice and due process, stressing that the commission had chosen to stand firmly on the side of judicial pronouncements rather than political manoeuvring.
According to the statement, the Ibadan Federal High Court had nullified the PDP convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2015, and restrained those who emerged from that exercise, widely known as the Aminu Turaki–led group, from parading themselves as members of the PDP National Working Committee.
By extending its invitation exclusively to the Mohammed and Anyanwu–led caretaker committee, the Abia PDP argued, INEC had demonstrated full compliance with the subsisting court order and effectively foreclosed parallel claims to the party’s national leadership by the Turaki and Seyi Makinde faction.
The party said the development marked a significant milestone in restoring order, legality and internal coherence within the PDP at the national level, particularly as preparations intensify for a credible national convention and future electoral contests.
With INEC’s position now aligned with the court’s ruling, the Abia PDP expressed optimism that the party could now redirect its energy toward reconciliation, unity and the stabilisation of its structures across the federation.
The statement reiterated the chapter’s commitment to due process and urged members to respect judicial decisions, close ranks and work collectively to strengthen the PDP at the ward, local government, state and national levels.
