Military veterans across the nation have expressed their outrage towards Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, following a recent confrontation with a naval officer during an enforcement visit to a disputed land in Abuja. A statement released by Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, the spokesman for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, condemned Wike for his verbal assault on the naval officer during the encounter. “How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera? If he was responsible, he should have engaged the Chief of Naval Staff privately rather than attempting to disgrace a retired senior officer,” Durowaiye-Herberts stated. His comments reflect a broader sentiment among veterans who believe that such disrespect undermines the authority and integrity of public institutions.

The veterans have also criticized calls for disciplinary action against the naval officer involved in the incident, asserting that any punitive measures would be met with strong resistance. “If for any reason the officer is punished, military veterans will occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister,” Durowaiye-Herberts warned, emphasizing the solidarity among veterans in defending their own.

“Wike’s action demeans the dignity of the office of a minister. He should apologise for using abusive language. It is not acceptable behaviour,” Durowaiye-Herberts added, reiterating the call for accountability and respect within the ranks of public service.
