Have you heard the tale of the man who sold his soul for knowledge and power?
Disillusioned with life and frustrated due to the limited scope of man’s knowledge. Dr. Johann Faust decides to sell his soul to Lucifer in order to obtain power over the demon, Mephistopheles. He foolishly asks for 24 years of knowledge and power. There is an old superstition that a contract signed in blood is eternally binding, as soon as Faust signs with his own blood, he commits himself to eternal damnation. (what is now known as the Faustian Bargain).
He later realizes that only the blood of Christ could release him from such a bond. Faust adored the idea of becoming all powerful and God-like and he believed that being successful with dark magic will help him to achieve his highest desires, he chooses Necromancy which is conjuring up the dead through occult forces.
Through Mephistopheles, Faust is able to travel far and wide as well as learn and perform different types of magic. He soon realizes how foolish he was and how his soul was too great a price to pay. The power and knowledge drove him mad. As soon as his deal expires, he is carried off to spend an eternity in hell.
His last words, “Burn my books” so no one will discover the secrets of knowledge and power he had written inside.
What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8:36)
The devil promises one, gives one but then takes ten.
Remember, “the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
Choose abundant life in Christ.
Selah.
