Hundreds of residents in Plateau State poured into the streets on Monday morning, defying a government-imposed curfew to protest the deadly Palm Sunday attack in Jos North Local Government Area.
The demonstration took place in Anguwan Rukuba, the scene of the violence, and was streamed live on TikTok. Protesters, visibly angry, called for urgent government intervention, insisting that imposing a curfew does little to address the repeated killings in the area.
“People are outside because of the attack that happened yesterday. They even chased security personnel because they are not helping matters here,” one resident said. Another eyewitness described the attack as sudden and brutal, explaining that gunmen opened fire indiscriminately between 7 and 8 p.m. in a busy market, sending residents fleeing for safety.
Many demonstrators accused authorities of failing to prevent recurring attacks and described the curfew as both ineffective and unnecessary. Security operatives later moved in to disperse the crowd, reportedly pursuing protesters and preparing to deploy tear gas.
The protest follows Sunday evening’s attack, when gunmen, reportedly dressed in military uniforms, stormed Anguwan Rukuba, opened fire on residents, and left several people dead and many others injured.
