Traffic will be partially restricted across parts of Agege on Sunday as Lagos authorities clear key roads for a political-themed mini-marathon tagged Run for Asiwaju 2027, organised in support of President Bola Tinubu.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority announced that the race will start from the Agege Local Government secretariat before moving through Odo Eran and Oba Ogunji Road, then on to Oke Koto, Oniwaya and Dopemu.
From there, runners are expected to connect Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road to Agbotikuyo, link Old Ipaja Motor Road and finish at the Orile Agege Local Council Development Area secretariat. LASTMA said vehicular movement along these corridors will be curtailed for the duration of the event and urged motorists to plan ahead.
To ease congestion, the agency advised drivers coming from Wemco Road to divert through Ogba, pass Excellent Hotel, then link College Road to Iju Road. Motorists approaching from Pen Cinema were directed to use Moshalashi Alhaja and Mobil Ashade as alternative routes.
The mini-marathon is being hosted by Orile-Agege LCDA under its chairman, Dipo Liadi. Beyond its overt political messaging, organisers say the event is designed to promote community cohesion, identify emerging athletic talent and galvanise grassroots backing for Tinubu’s administration ahead of the next general elections.
Participation has been opened to a wide range of groups, including youths, professional runners, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, VIPs and representatives of Hausa and Igbo communities, in a bid to project inclusivity and ethnic balance.
Prizes worth a total of ₦2.3 million have been set aside. The first 200 finishers are to receive ₦10,000 each, while seven elite athletes will earn ₦50,000 apiece, a structure organisers say is meant to reward both mass participation and high performance.
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has thrown his weight behind the race and pledged to run in the VIP category. He described the event as symbolic of what he called Tinubu’s transformative leadership and framed the cash rewards as an incentive for excellence.
LASTMA appealed to residents to obey traffic officials deployed along the route, warning that non-compliance could worsen delays. The agency encouraged motorists to leave home earlier than usual or avoid the affected axis entirely while the race is underway.
