Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has come out in support of Victor Osimhen’s intense reaction during Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 win over Mozambique in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, describing it as the kind of “warrior spirit” that top players bring to big games.

 Speaking on his Obi One podcast, Mikel said Osimhen’s visible passion and desire for excellence even when it boiled over into a heated exchange with teammate Ademola Lookman reflects a deep commitment to winning and isn’t necessarily a sign of division within the squad. 

He stressed that strong personalities who push each other are often found in successful teams. 

While Mikel acknowledged that some aspects of Osimhen’s behaviour like walking straight down the tunnel after the match weren’t ideal, he argued that frustration and internal demands for more from teammates can be positive if managed properly. 

He also praised Lookman for his mature response following the incident and expressed confidence that any differences would be resolved quickly as Nigeria prepares for a crucial quarter-final showdown against Algeria.
