Have you ever opened Instagram or TikTok just to relax, only to leave feeling like your life is somehow behind?
Someone is travelling to another country. Someone just got a new job. Someone is getting married. Someone has started a successful business. Another person is buying a house, graduating, or announcing a major achievement.
And suddenly, you begin to question yourself.
“What am I doing with my life?”
Social media has made it easier than ever to see other people's achievements. The problem is that we often compare our everyday reality to someone else's highlight reel.
We see the new car but not the years of struggle. We see the successful business but not the failed attempts. We see the beautiful relationship but not the problems behind closed doors. We see the achievement, but we rarely see the journey.
This constant exposure can make us feel like we are not moving fast enough.
For young people especially, there is pressure to have everything figured out early. By 25, you are expected to have a great career. By 30, you should own a house, be financially comfortable, and perhaps even be married. Social media can make these expectations feel even more urgent.
But life is not a competition, and there is no universal timeline for success.
Someone else's progress does not mean you are failing. Your journey may simply look different.
Sometimes, you need to put your phone down and remember that your life is still happening, even when nobody is watching.
Have you ever felt like social media made you question your own progress?
