Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £48 million, with a further £2m in performance-related add-ons. The transfer ends weeks of negotiations and delivers Michael Carrick a dynamic central midfielder regarded as one of the most promising talents of his generation.
Santos, 22, joined Chelsea in 2023 and quickly established himself in the Premier League, making 28 appearances and impressing with his energy, ball-winning ability and composure in possession. His form alerted several top clubs, but United moved decisively after missing out on Mateus Fernandes, who opted to join Tottenham earlier in the window.
Speaking to the club’s in-house media, Santos described the move as a pivotal moment in his career. He said that representing United carries special significance because many of his childhood idols played at Old Trafford, and he highlighted the club’s ambition and dressing-room environment as key factors in his decision.
A major attraction for Santos is the chance to work under Carrick, whose reputation as a midfield strategist has grown since he moved into coaching. Santos believes Carrick’s experience in the position can refine his game and help him make the leap from highly rated prospect to established Premier League force.
The Brazilian becomes United’s latest addition in a summer focused on reshaping the spine of the team. However, their pursuit of another Brazilian midfielder, Éderson of Atalanta, has stalled despite a fee of around £35m having been agreed before the World Cup. Club sources say the deal is no longer progressing, though they have not disclosed the reasons and have left the door open to revisiting talks later in the window.
United are also pushing ahead with a move for Youri Tielemans. The club are prepared to activate a £35m release clause in the Aston Villa midfielder’s contract, and the Belgian is understood to be open to the switch. Villa would prefer to keep the 29-year-old, but Tielemans has indicated that the chance to join United and compete regularly for major honours is an opportunity he is reluctant to pass up.
