The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has condemned the ongoing arrests of participants in the #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests across Nigeria. In a statement on Monday, RULAAC's Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, criticized the actions of security operatives, calling them indicative of the government's insensitivity and despotic tendencies.
Nwanguma emphasized that the protesters are making legitimate demands for good governance and that they have a constitutional right to express their displeasure over the economic hardship and widespread suffering in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu's administration. He stated that peaceful protest is not an offense and should not be met with repression.
RULAAC highlighted the arrest of human rights activist Tunde Oluajo (aka Sankara) and Michael Adaramoye, National Coordinator of Youth Rights Campaign, by the State Security Service early Monday morning. The organization views these arrests as a direct contradiction to the Tinubu administration’s claims of respecting freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.
Nwanguma called the government's actions hypocritical and a sign of intolerance for dissent. He argued that using force, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests to suppress peaceful protesters undermines Nigeria's democratic ideals and international human rights commitments.
RULAAC demanded the immediate release of all arrested protesters and urged the government to respect citizens' rights to peaceful protest and engage in dialogue to address their grievances instead of resorting to repression.
