Super Eagles striker Rafiu Durosinmi is on the verge of a landmark move to Belgian side Genk, where he is expected to become the club’s most expensive signing following an agreement with Italian outfit Pisa.

Reports in Italy indicate that Genk have agreed a €10.5m deal for the 23-year-old, with additional performance-related bonuses built into the package. Pisa are also understood to have secured a 10 per cent sell-on clause, ensuring they benefit from any future transfer involving the Nigerian forward.

The fee will surpass Genk’s previous transfer record, the €7m paid to Celta Vigo for winger Theo Bongonda in 2019, underlining the club’s belief in Durosinmi’s potential despite his difficult spell in Italy.

Durosinmi joined Pisa from Czech side Viktoria Plzen in January in a move worth around €9m, after emerging as one of the most promising strikers in the Czech league. However, he found life in Serie A challenging, managing just one goal in 12 competitive appearances as Pisa battled at the wrong end of the table.

The club’s relegation has accelerated their decision to sell, allowing them to recoup most of their investment while retaining a stake in the player’s future. For Genk, it represents an opportunity to revive a talent whose profile fits perfectly with their long-standing recruitment model.

Standing at 1.92 metres, Durosinmi offers the physical presence and aerial threat that have become hallmarks of Genk’s centre-forwards. The Belgian side has a strong track record with Nigerian strikers, most notably Paul Onuachu, who dominated the Pro League before earning a move to the Premier League.

Another Nigerian, Tolu Arokodare, also used Genk as a springboard, rebuilding his reputation and finishing as the Belgian Pro League’s top scorer before securing a transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Genk’s hierarchy believe Durosinmi can follow a similar trajectory if he rediscovers the form he showed at Viktoria Plzen, where his blend of strength, mobility and finishing made him one of the most coveted forwards in Central Europe.

The move could also have significant implications for his international career. With competition fierce in the Super Eagles attack, consistent performances and goals in Belgium could push Durosinmi back into contention for regular call-ups, adding another Nigerian success story to Genk’s growing legacy.
