An X user has ignited a wide-ranging debate on social media after declaring that no woman should enter marriage without her own source of income, insisting she refuses to become “a liability” to any man.

In a detailed post, the woman explained that the conversation began at home when her mother mentioned a younger acquaintance, a trained lawyer who married shortly after graduating from university and is now a full-time housewife.

Her mother reportedly praised the arrangement as ideal, but the poster said she could not ignore the risks. She asked what would happen if the woman’s husband suddenly lost his job or died unexpectedly. Who would shoulder the financial responsibility for the family then

She stressed that she was not wishing misfortune on anyone, but argued that economic realities have changed. In her view, relying solely on a partner’s income leaves women dangerously exposed in a world of unstable jobs, rising living costs and unpredictable crises.

The X user went on to say that when she eventually marries, she wants to know she can maintain a comfortable standard of living for herself and any children, with or without her husband’s support. For her, marriage should be a partnership of two capable adults, not a rescue plan for someone unwilling or unable to earn.

Financial independence, she argued, is not just about money but about dignity. A woman who earns her own income, she wrote, is harder to control, less likely to be trapped in an abusive or unhappy relationship and better positioned to make decisions based on what is right rather than what she can afford to lose.

“Nothing beats having your own money as a woman,” she wrote, adding that no one can use money to belittle or silence a woman who can pay her own bills.

She ended her post with a call to action, urging women to prioritise education, careers and savings before and during marriage. Love, she suggested, may be the foundation of a union, but financial stability is what keeps it from collapsing when life takes an unexpected turn.
