Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are reportedly among several high-profile casualties from Thomas Tuchel’s provisional England squad for the upcoming World Cup, in what would be one of the most dramatic selection shake-ups in recent national team history.
Multiple British outlets report that both Manchester City’s Foden and Chelsea playmaker Palmer, central figures in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, are expected to be omitted as Tuchel reshapes the squad in his own image. The decision would mark a stark reversal of fortunes for two players widely seen as the creative core of England’s next generation.
Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is also believed to be missing from the list, despite his reputation as one of Europe’s most inventive defenders. In contrast, Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney is tipped to be a surprise inclusion, with Tuchel said to be attracted by his physical presence, penalty prowess and ability to operate as a traditional focal point in attack.
Reports suggest that Foden and Palmer have been judged harshly on what has been viewed as underwhelming club campaigns, with Tuchel prioritising form and tactical fit over reputation. Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, both among the most productive English attackers in the Premier League, are also expected to miss out despite strong domestic seasons.
In midfield, veteran Brentford player Jordan Henderson is understood to have earned a recall at the expense of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. Henderson’s leadership and tournament experience are thought to have weighed heavily in his favour as Tuchel looks to balance a refreshed squad with proven voices in the dressing room.
The ruthlessness of the selection process was underlined by Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who revealed his disappointment after learning he would not be travelling with the squad. “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” the 33-year-old wrote on social media, adding that he had been left “shocked and gutted” by the decision.
Tuchel is yet to publicly confirm his final list, but if the reported omissions are borne out, England will head to the World Cup without several of the stars who helped carry them to the brink of European glory.
