Sadio Mané grew up in a small village of Senegal called Bambali. His family didn't have much and they took football as a waste of time. His dad always wanted him to focus on school and prayers rather than wasting time playing football. Sadio Mané just couldn't let go though, it was more than just a game to him. He'd play with barefoots until his feet got tired. He ignored the urge to stop what he loves the most.
As at age 15, he made a very tough bold step. He left home with almost nothing. He was afraid of the uncertainties though. Those in the city made fun of him because of his torn shoes and how unhealthy he looked. Even coaches doubted his ability. Other players laughed at him but he didn't give up so easily. The pain of being rejected motivated him to try harder each time.
When he finally had the opportunity, he didn't just play to pass away time, he fought for his dreams, to prove to his village and everyone who have ever doubted him that football is worth the shot! Success though, is never as easy many would want it to. And when the success actually came, he didn't let it make him forget all he went through to get there. He built schools and hospitals. He gave back something to those who once watched him leave with nothing. Nothing but courage and determination.
And his story is special because of how simple it is; a bit with torn boots, patched balls and no money but never stopped believing. His journey is not polished with good Samaritans and Destiny Helpers as many call it. But it stands out still.
Sadio Mané’s story is proof that even from the smallest places, greatness can rise.
