Like a crocodile sitting at the outer banks of the river soaking up the sun, there I was sitting at the entrance of the house soaking up what's left of the sun as it set gradually revealing the moon, . I was eagerly waiting for the day to be over, that has been my daily routine for the past few weeks since I moved into my new apartment you'd think I preferred night time over the day but far from it,
it was a survival instinct and a means of escape from the new environment I have found my self in, I came to this town for my nysc service but unfortunately the corpers lounge at the school I'm currently serving at was
occupied, i tried squatting with fellow corpers in the least occupied room but after just 2 days I was already having problems with my new roommates due to religious and cultural differences not forgetting bad habits as well. You'd think as graduates we were literate enough to see beyond the facades of political agendas driving by politicians. For that reason I decided I'll be moving out so i had to find a new apartment close to were I'll be serving, luckily for me within those 2 days of frustration and annoyance I also made a friend, a female friend Jennifer who was also a corper, the most brilliant girl I have ever come across, the best graduating student in her faculty, the faculty of engineering, she helped me find my new apartment, it was the least expensive apartment in the environment close to the school. Before that, Jennifer tried talking me out of leaving the lounge In her words " I have tried living outside the lounge but I could no longer cope with the expenses and I decided to come back and squat here in the lounge and since then I have been saving money, everything in the city is very expensive, from the food clothes and house rents, not to mention how much you'll be spending every day to transport yourself to the school premises, except if of course you're from a well to do family" of course I'm not from a rich family, I don't even have any side hustle that generates me income, I'm only depending on the allawee and the little stipend I get from my parents monthly, but I had already made up my mind, I'd rather sleep in the street than with those tribalistic animals.
And that is how I found myself in this apartment, a storey building plastered from the outside and painted with bright colours on the inside, with the landlord and his family occupying the upper floor while the first floor was meant for the tenants which had 3 rooms, sharing a single toilet and bathroom, the landlord who is barely around, traveling alot due to the nature of his Job, left the house in the care of his son named jimmy, since his wife was also busy with her business.. on the first floor lived 3 tenants myself, and two other bachelor guys who were full-time workers and were barely around. Now back to why I was sitting outside eagerly waiting the day to, jimmy the landlord's son who was always at home turned his room to a club only that it was in the day time and it lasted till 8pm and guess who's room was right underneath Jimmy's? Well you guessed right, it was mine, the horror of coming back home every day from from your field of assignment tied and exhausted then you try to rest in your room only to be disturbed by the loud and irresponsible music playing accompanied by the footstep of people dancing to it. I have never told Jennifer what I'm going through in my new apartment, my ego and pride couldn't let me too cause I know she will only suggest I come back to the lounge and that's not an option for me
