Wayne Rooney has ignited a firestorm in football by openly attacking Mohamed Salah, accusing the Liverpool superstar of “disrespect” and warning he’s trashing his own Liverpool legacy after the Egyptian’s headline-grabbing outburst put his Anfield future in jeopardy.
Once hailed as Liverpool’s golden boy, Salah is now at the center of controversy after lashing out at being benched for a third straight match. Claiming he was “thrown under the bus” and admitting to having zero chemistry with new manager Arne Slot, Salah’s comments have sent shockwaves through the club. Fans and pundits alike are now questioning whether his time at Liverpool is coming to an ugly end.
Rooney, never shy of a hot take, blasted Salah on the BBC: “Why would you come out and say that?” he scoffed. “Salah’s been brilliant for Liverpool and gets paid what he deserves, but now he’s biting the hand that feeds him. It’s disrespectful to his teammates, manager, and the fans.”
The ex-Manchester United icon piled on, highlighting Salah’s dip in form: “Time catches up with all of us. This season, he hasn’t been good enough. Slot benched him for a reason. Salah needs to roll his sleeves up, not run his mouth.”
Rooney then zeroed in on what he called Salah’s “arrogance.” “He thinks he doesn’t need to earn his spot? That’s not how football works. If I was a teammate, I’d be fuming. Liverpool need him now, and instead he’s thrown them under the bus.”
Rooney’s solution? Drastic action. “Speak to the manager and apologize,or just leave. This needs fixing, fast.”
He even warned Salah that he’s “destroying his legacy” at Liverpool, despite ranking among the club’s greatest ever. “He’s about to throw it all away. He’s handled this terribly. Get back to work.”
The Salah saga is now being compared to Cristiano Ronaldo’s infamous Manchester United exit, raising fears of permanent damage between Salah and the club. And the timing? Even more suspicious as Salah is about to jet off to the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving Liverpool in the lurch for a month.
Rooney didn’t miss the chance to call out Salah’s so-called tactics: “He’s got protection now, being away with Egypt. It’s no coincidence,he’s dropped this bombshell, then disappears. Good for Liverpool to get him out of the way.”
Rooney pushed new boss Arne Slot to come down hard: “Slot needs to assert himself, tell Salah to leave for AFCON and stay away from the team. If I was Slot, Salah wouldn’t get near the squad.”
Let’s not forget: Salah has been a Liverpool scoring machine, notching 250 goals since 2017. But at 33, he’s showing cracks, with just four goals in 13 league games this season. Still, his ego seems bigger than ever.
Rooney summed up the “aging star” dilemma: “When your form drops, you blame everything but yourself. Salah’s not looking in the mirror. In a couple of years, he’ll regret this, but only he can fix it, by actually performing.”
Rooney even drew parallels to his own career, boasting about how he handled being benched under Mourinho: “I had an honest conversation, respected the decision, and didn’t complain. Salah should have done the same.”
