Anthony Gordon marked his Barcelona debut with two assists in five minutes as the reigning champions thrashed Elche 5-0 in their La Liga opener.

The England winger, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle in the summer, was introduced in the 65th minute as a replacement for Lamine Yamal.

Gordon needed just two minutes to make an impact, slipping a pass through to captain Raphinha, who finished to put Barcelona 3-0 ahead.

The 25-year-old, operating on the left wing, then provided a second assist just four minutes later after racing through on goal before squaring the ball to Fermin Lopez, who finished into an unguarded net to make it 4-0.

Gordon registered just two assists in 26 Premier League appearances for Newcastle during the 2025-26 season, but finished as the club's top scorer with 17 goals across all competitions.

The victory saw Hansi Flick's side begin their title defence with a win, following Real Madrid's winning start against Espanyol on Saturday at the weekend.

Barcelona took the lead inside 14 minutes after Raphinha was brought down inside the box by Victor Chust. The Brazilian winger stepped up and beat Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro from the penalty spot.

Elche threatened the Barcelona defence on occasion in the first half but failed to find an equaliser before falling further behind just before the interval.

Karim Adeyemi, also making his debut after joining from Borussia Dortmund, doubled Barcelona's advantage after being played through by Raphinha before calmly slotting the ball past Dituro for his first goal in the Blaugrana colours.

The goal came just minutes after Barcelona lost midfielder Gavi to injury, with Pedri coming on as his replacement.

Yamal, who had blazed an early chance over the bar, made way for Gordon in the second half. The England international then set up Barcelona's third and fourth goals before Lopez completed the rout in the 79th minute.

Barcelona will return to action against Athletic Bilbao tomorrow, Thursday, 27 August, at 8:00 PM.
