At Least 38 Feared Trapped After Islamic School Building Collapses In Indonesia - 3 months ago

Search and rescue crews raced Tuesday to recover as many as 38 people still believed buried after a multi-storey building at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java, suddenly collapsed while students gathered for afternoon prayers.

Rescue teams have pulled out survivors and bodies as the death toll rises to at least three, and over 90 others are reported injured, some critically.

Authorities say the building was undergoing an unauthorized expansion, adding additional upper floors to a structure whose foundation was already strained.

Relatives and community members gathered anxiously at the site, scouring lists of missing students and pleading with rescue teams to act swiftly. Officials have pledged a full investigation into the circumstances that allowed the unsafe construction to proceed and are calling for stricter oversight of school infrastructure nationwide.
