The Embassy of Ireland in Nigeria has announced the opening of applications for the Ireland Fellows Programme, offering fully funded Master’s scholarships to qualified Nigerians.

The programme targets early and mid-career professionals who wish to pursue a one-year Master’s degree at leading Irish universities and higher education institutions. It is designed to build capacity in partner countries by supporting future leaders, decision-makers and influencers through high-quality postgraduate education.

According to information released by the embassy, the scheme is open to resident nationals of Nigeria and Ghana. Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower and demonstrate a minimum of three years of relevant, verifiable work experience after graduation.

The Ireland Fellows Programme covers a wide range of disciplines, with particular emphasis on areas that support sustainable development, good governance, human rights, and social and economic progress. For Nigerian candidates, the initiative also includes the Roger Casement Fellowship in Human Rights, which focuses on Master’s programmes in Law, Human Rights and Governance.

The scholarship is fully funded by the Government of Ireland and covers tuition fees in full, along with a monthly living allowance. Successful fellows also receive support for accommodation, return flights, visa costs and health insurance, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent qualified candidates from taking up their places.

Prospective applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic potential, leadership qualities and a clear commitment to returning home after their studies to contribute to national development. The embassy notes that the programme is particularly interested in candidates who can show how their chosen course in Ireland will translate into concrete impact in their professional fields and communities.

Applications are to be submitted online through the official Ireland Fellows Programme portal, where detailed eligibility criteria, a list of approved courses and guidance on the multi-stage selection process are provided. The process typically includes an initial eligibility screening, a written application, and, for shortlisted candidates, an interview stage.

The embassy is encouraging interested Nigerians to prepare their academic transcripts, proof of work experience and a clear statement of purpose ahead of the opening date, stressing that late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
