Gary Shaw, former Aston Villa striker, has tragically died at the age of 63 after suffering injuries from a fall.
Shaw, a key figure in Aston Villa's historic triumphs, played a significant role in securing the 1981 league championship and the 1982 European Cup. Having risen through the club’s youth system, he scored 79 goals across 213 appearances for his childhood team.
In a heartfelt statement, Aston Villa expressed their shock and sorrow: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Gary Shaw, a legend of our European Cup-winning team. He was a gifted striker who brought joy to our fans and played a crucial part in the club’s success during the 1980s. Gary was admired by many and received numerous individual honors for his talents."
The club also shared that Shaw passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, who requested Villa to issue the statement on their behalf. "Our thoughts are with Gary’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement concluded.
Shaw’s impressive career also saw him named the Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year in 1981, followed by the prestigious European Young Player of the Year award in 1982.
