The wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has firmly denied reports that she has filed for divorce, describing the claims as the work of mischief-makers intent on exploiting her family’s ordeal.

In a statement shared on her verified X handle, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu said her attention was drawn to what she called “false reports circulating online” alleging that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband.

She dismissed the stories as baseless and unverified, stressing that there was no truth whatsoever to the claims.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she wrote, urging the public to disregard the rumours.

Okwu-Kanu expressed concern that some individuals and platforms were eager to “fabricate stories” about her family without any attempt at verification, warning that such conduct undermines responsible journalism and further traumatizes families already under pressure.

She appealed to the public and the media to rely only on information issued directly by her or through her authorised representatives, noting that those who reached out to confirm the story before sharing it had demonstrated the kind of caution needed in the digital age.

Nnamdi Kanu, whom she married in 2009, is currently being held at the Sokoto Custodial Centre after his conviction on terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja. He was found guilty on multiple counts and handed several sentences ordered to run concurrently, effectively amounting to life imprisonment.

The IPOB leader has since filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn the judgment. His legal team argues that his trial and conviction were marred by procedural and constitutional violations, and they are asking the appellate court to quash the verdict.

Against this backdrop of ongoing legal battles and political tension, Okwu-Kanu said the circulation of false stories about her marriage was a deliberate attempt to sow confusion and weaken public support. She reiterated her commitment to her husband and called on supporters to remain focused on verified information rather than online speculation.
