Mohamed Salah is in advanced talks to join Turkish side Trabzonspor after leaving Liverpool as a free agent, in what would be one of the most high-profile transfers in the history of the Turkish Super Lig.

Trabzonspor confirmed that negotiations are under way and said the Egyptian forward is expected to travel to Istanbul before heading on to Trabzon to complete the move. Reports in Turkey and Europe indicate the 34-year-old has agreed a two-year deal, positioning the Black Sea club as his next destination after a glittering spell at Anfield.

The club said that details of Salah’s arrival and public presentation will be announced through its official channels, underlining the scale of the occasion for a team that finished third in the league last season and qualified for the UEFA Europa League.

Salah departs Liverpool as one of the most prolific forwards in the club’s modern history. Across nine seasons he scored 257 goals in 442 appearances, driving a period of sustained success that brought the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

His availability on a free transfer attracted interest from across the globe. Clubs in Major League Soccer and Saudi Arabia explored potential deals, while Turkish giants Besiktas publicly confirmed they had tabled an offer, only to see Trabzonspor emerge as front-runners.

The move would follow a demanding year for Salah at both club and international level. He featured at the World Cup, playing five matches as Egypt reached the round of 16 before being knocked out by eventual champions Argentina.

His final season at Liverpool was turbulent. Despite signing a contract extension that was due to run until 2025, his form dipped and he was dropped for three consecutive matches. In a candid interview, Salah accused the club of leaving him exposed during a poor run of results and admitted he had no real relationship with then-manager Arne Slot, casting doubt over his future.

He was briefly frozen out, including omission from a Champions League squad to face Inter Milan, and although he was later reintegrated after the Africa Cup of Nations, he never fully rediscovered the level that had made him a four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner.

A move to Trabzon now offers Salah a fresh start and gives the Turkish club a marquee figurehead as they prepare for domestic and European campaigns.
