SA Fan Mama Joy Secures World Cup Lifeline Through New Sponsor - 3 hours ago

South Africa’s most recognisable superfan, Joy “Mama Joy” Chauke, has confirmed she will be in the stands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after landing a sponsorship deal with sports, fitness and lifestyle brand abOVEnormal.

The colourful supporter, famed for her elaborate outfits and booming vuvuzela, had been at the centre of a public storm over who should fund her trips to major tournaments. Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie revealed that his department had previously paid for at least two of her international trips, including close to R700,000 for her presence at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

When McKenzie drew a line under further government funding, Mama Joy took to social media to express her disappointment, insisting her presence at global events helped showcase South African passion and identity. The debate quickly turned her into a lightning rod for wider frustrations about public spending and celebrity superfans.

Her new partnership with abOVEnormal appears to have changed the narrative. Speaking to City Press, Chauke said securing backing to attend the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada was both a personal victory and a vindication of her role as an unofficial ambassador for South African sport. She described herself as “over the moon” and framed the opportunity as proof that perseverance and faith can overcome public criticism.

Chauke’s deal is closely tied to the vision of abOVEnormal founder Masingita Masunga, who was born with cerebral palsy and has built the brand around themes of equality, inclusion and resilience. Chauke said she accepted the ambassador role without hesitation, believing the partnership could help amplify Masunga’s mission to support people facing barriers in sport and everyday life.

Masunga, appearing alongside Chauke and former Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu in an announcement video, has launched a fundraising roadshow in Limpopo linked to the initiative. While it remains unclear whether Chauke’s full World Cup itinerary depends on the success of these activities, the campaign is designed to draw public participation into a broader social cause.

For all the controversy surrounding her, Mama Joy remains a potent symbol of South African fandom. The abOVEnormal endorsement underlines her enduring commercial appeal and confirms that, love her or loathe her, she continues to command a unique place in the country’s sporting imagination.
