A Texas mayor has urged authorities to cancel an upcoming concert by rapper Ye, citing his history of antisemitic remarks and controversial public behavior.
Gina Ortiz Jones, the mayor of San Antonio, expressed her opposition to Ye’s scheduled July 4 performance at the Alamodome in a post on X.
“I support canceling the Kanye West concert,” Jones wrote. She argued that San Antonio, known as “Military City USA,” should not host an artist with a documented record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-owned venue, particularly on Independence Day as the nation marks its 250th anniversary.
Jones added that confronting antisemitism is essential to building a stronger and more united society.
The planned concert is the latest event to attract criticism because of Ye’s past statements and actions. The artist has faced widespread backlash in recent years over antisemitic comments, including the release of a song titled “Heil Hitler” and the promotion of merchandise featuring Nazi imagery.
Several international venues and authorities have also distanced themselves from the rapper. During the European leg of his tour, the United Kingdom barred him from entering the country, leading to the cancellation of his planned appearance at London’s Wireless Festival. British authorities reportedly revoked his visa, stating that his presence was not considered to be in the public interest.
In Switzerland, football club FC Basel cancelled a scheduled June performance, saying it could not provide a platform for the artist in a manner consistent with its values.
A planned concert in Chorzów, Poland, which would have been Ye’s first performance in the country in 15 years, was also called off, with organizers citing legal and administrative reasons.
The debate surrounding the San Antonio show continues as city officials and community members weigh concerns about free expression against objections to the artist’s past conduct and remarks.
