Hamas has accused Israel of assassinating its political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in a raid on his residence in Tehran. Haniyeh was in Iran for the inauguration of the new Iranian president. His death has sent shockwaves through the region, with Hamas warning of major repercussions.
In a statement, Hamas mourned Haniyeh and condemned the attack: “The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourns our great Palestinian people, the Arab and Islamic nation, and all the free people of the world: brother, leader, martyr, Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh. He was killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran. To God we belong and to Him we shall return. It is a struggle, victory or martyrdom.”
Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, called Haniyeh’s assassination a “dangerous event”: “The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades announce the martyrdom of leader Ismail Abdul Salam Haniyeh, commander of Hamas, following a cowardly Zionist assassination operation. His life culminated in martyrdom during the noble battle, ‘Al-Aqsa Flood.’ This criminal assassination shifts the battle to new dimensions and will have major repercussions across the region. The enemy will pay for its aggression with its own blood in Gaza, the West Bank, and within its borders, wherever our fighters reach by God’s will.”
The assassination of Haniyeh, a key figure in Hamas, is expected to escalate tensions in the already volatile region. Hamas has vowed to continue its struggle, calling on supporters and allies to prepare for intensified conflict. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, as this event could lead to significant shifts in the Middle East's geopolitical landscape.
