David could never forget the sound, the tearing apart of the metals, the shattering of glasses and the instantaneous rapid flashes of light. The screaming that was too deafening coming to a sudden stop in the vehicle. And then it was just silence, a very deep one.
Just a few hours before the tragic incidence, it was all just laughter. He had jokingly argued with Michael over the music. Sarah was teasing Emma about how horrible she sang, but Emma, as fiery as usual had sing even much louder just to keep them pissed off. The car was filled with their voices and the kind of warmth many can only dream of.
And in that moment, David remembers glancing at them through the rearview mirror, Sarah leaning on Emma while Michael drummed the dashboard like it was his stage. And in that very moment, life felt complete.
But as usual, life can be cruel. In a split second, headlights showed up too quickly and just too close to avoid. The tires screeched across the tarred road as David tried to regain control of the steering wheels. The crash was seriously brutal and when he opened his eye, blood rushed into is as he tried to clear it and look around. He shouted their names but the response was nothing but silence. He survived but they were all gone.
Observers say it's a miracle, but David didn't see it as such. He felt guilt. This guilt that can't even be properly explained. He was the one driving, he was the one who lost concentration and yet he was the only one that survived. He tried to make it make sense but it just couldn't.
Every night he'd relive that moment. The laughter and nagging before the crash, how Emma smacked Michael for singing off key, Sarah's soft humming as she stared out the window in satisfaction of the life they had. Then the crash played in as well. He tried to distract himself, to stop that part of the screen from playing in his head, but it kept playing again and again.
He ran out and screamed very loud. And in that moment, a flood of other possibilities filled his mind. What if he had hit the breaks earlier? What is he had turned left instead? What if they never took that part?
And as usual, the world moved on like it never actually happened. But David is left to suffer a guilt be doesn't deserve, one that'll remain with him forever.
