The BBC and other outlets reported that five institutions across Afghanistan stated that the Taliban had ordered them to close until further notice, and women training to become midwives and nurses were instructed not to return to classes on Wednesday.
The European Union condemned the Taliban's latest decision, calling it another severe violation of fundamental human rights and an unjustifiable attack on women's access to education in Afghanistan.
On Thursday, the EU strongly criticized the Taliban for depriving women and girls of education following reports that the Taliban's leader had ordered both public and private institutions to halt medical courses for women and girls.
The Taliban has not confirmed the order or commented on the media reports. The Public Health Ministry spokesman was unavailable for comment.
In September 2021, shortly after the Taliban returned to power, they suspended schooling for girls beyond grade six. In December 2022, they banned women from attending universities. Medical education, including nursing and midwifery, had been one of the few avenues through which women could continue their studies.
