Disney's Snow White 2025 - 4 months ago

I recently watched Disney's new live action Snow White, like the movie Snow White. It felt unbelievably hollow, if that's the word.

Yeah, the movie was obviously Disney's. The series of songs made that obvious but this Snow White was different, yeah it was strong, but entirely hidden under screenplay that felt more drama-like than fairytale.

Yet it reminded me of the popular old Snow White story. I think the 'snow' and 'white' are actually supposed to be together, as in SnowWhite.

The story is quite a sad one. It wasn't enough to loose her mother, she also lost her father who was the only one that kept her hope from sinking in. All the joy and peace she knew from sharing came to nothing in the blink of an eye. The arrangement of the scenes in the movie, the way her mother's reflection suddenly disappeared from the water in their favorite well impacts this emptiness in viewers. If not every viewer, at least I felt it.

The fact that the very thing that brought her hope and joy was used against her, it reflects the pity the dwarfs felt that couldn't let them bury her. You could feel the happiness on her face when her wicked stepmother allows her to go gather apples in the field, but little did she know that it was a setup. Thanks to the good heart of the guard who was even willing to die if only the queen could show mercy on Snow.

Good thing she didn't actually kill him, like I initially thought she would, but that would have been another level of tragedy. The lover boy, Jonathan had to go against the norms he grew up with while the King was still alive, just to survive the scorching reign of the wicked queen.

And Snow was left to believe that her father was still alive, a false hope that left her broken few moments before her death after being poisoned by the very person who should've been her mother. Learning that the only person her father trusted after her mom died, was the same person that killed him, must have hastened the poison process.

I just wondered what her story would have been like if the whole tragedy wasn't compensated with a happy ending.

From princess to slave to outcast to queen, SnowWhite went through a whole lot that leaves that original story remarkable and unforgettable!
