A Letter To The Leader And The Led - 4 hours ago

Dear Leaders,

I do hope we are all proud of the Nigerian reality of today? The reality that the economic development of our nation has been deteriorating for as long as I have been alive. The reality that there are more poor people than there are financially “stable” people in Nigeria. Our nationalist leaders fought so hard for the independence of their nation, of our nation but is this the nation they envisioned?. A nation that has rendered its youth defenseless, impoverished and almost dreamless ?. We used to be the “giants of Africa” but now we seem to be the “clowns of Africa”. The truth is, depending on an individual’s situation, the Nigerian reality can be perceived differently— but this is the reality of a 20 year old Nigerian.

On October 1st 1960, our nation gained her independence from the claws of the colonial masters, the streets was full with cries of joy and jubilation as the people hoped and envisioned the birth of a new nation. A nation that will sustain them, a nation that will uphold her motto — Unity and Faith, Progress and Peace. But today, the state of our nation could not be anymore in contrast to this vision. Nigeria, a country with so much potential is now barely able to keep her head above water.

Fear of violence and insurgency has become the new normal for the Nigerian peoples, with thousands of innocent Nigerians loosing their lives on a daily basis. In the past year, there has been records of violence in several states across the country. Lives cut short, families destroyed, homes burnt to the ground and yet Nigerians are hopeful.

Education, which is a supposed to be a fundamental right, has become a privilege in Nigeria . An average citizen can barely afford basic needs let alone access quality education. Education has become a far-fetched dream with limited opportunities and resources. The ones who were supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow have become the menace of today as frustration has driven Nigerian youths to engage in violence and crimes for survival. While children of the Oligarchs are alive and properly educated, the same can not be said for the children of ordinary citizens . From tuition hikes, to constant strikes, the Nigerian education system is failing its people.

The Nigerian police, who claim to be our guardian have unfortunately become oppressors to the very people they were meant to protect. At the sight of a uniformed officer, an innocent Nigerian flees for their life. Manhandling today, brutality tomorrow — the system is crumbling.

And yet, our leaders are deep in power struggles leaving their “ pack” to thrash around without a head. They have abandoned governance for their political aspirations. Nigerian leaders who always seem to be available for every photo op, has been unable to show substantive efforts towards addressing pressing issues. Our need has called for a change in the system, Nigerians call for retribution.

Nigerians dream of a nation where unity, peace and progress are more realistic than hypothetical. A nation where opportunities are accessible for the youths, healthcare is accessible for the sick, provisions are provided for the poor and justice is delivered to the oppressed. And until we actualize this, our struggle for a better Nigeria will continue.

 To the Nigerian Peoples,

While it is convenient to accuse the government, it is important to note that building a better Nigeria requires mutual accountability from both the leaders and the led. There is a need to understand that our individual character deficit has played a drastic role in the decay of our nation. Corruption, the bane of our society calls for introspection and collective responsibility.

Our strength, resilience and vibrant spirit have brought us this far.  Though we face challenges, there is an evident unwavering hope and determination to build a better future. When we stand together , our voices are louder and our actions more impactful. Remember the power of unity. Our mission is to embrace our rich cultural heritage, celebrate our diversity, and continue to strive for peace and progress. Our potential is limitless, and our future is bright. Keep pushing forward, and never lose faith in yourselves or your beloved nation. Together we can build the Nigeria of our dreams.

And remember our pledge to the nation — To be faithful, loyal and honest. To serve Nigeria with all our strength. To defend her unity, and uphold her honour and glory.
