Everybody wants to be good at something.
But wanting to be good and becoming exceptional are two completely different things.
Whether your craft is writing, photography, makeup, fashion, public speaking, music, cooking, content creation, business or anything else, becoming really good requires more than talent.
It requires intentionality.
1. Practice When Nobody Is Watching
The people you admire didn't become excellent overnight.
There were countless hours of practice that nobody saw.
You have to be willing to work even when nobody is clapping for you.
Sometimes, your greatest improvement will happen privately.
2. Don't Be Afraid to Be a Beginner
You cannot become an expert without first being terrible at something.
Your early work may make you cringe later.
That's okay.
Create anyway.
The person who keeps practising will eventually become better than the person who was too afraid to start.
3. Study People Who Are Better Than You
Don't just admire excellent work.
Study it.
Ask yourself:
Why does this work stand out?
What techniques are they using?
How do they communicate?
What makes their work different?
Learn from people ahead of you without trying to become a copy of them.
4. Ask for Honest Feedback
Sometimes, you are too close to your own work to see what needs improvement.
Find people who can give you honest, constructive feedback.
Don't only ask people who will say, “This is perfect!”
Sometimes, the person who tells you what is wrong with your work is more valuable than the person who constantly praises it.
5. Create Consistently
You cannot master a craft that you only practise when you feel inspired.
Consistency matters.
Write regularly.
Shoot regularly.
Edit regularly.
Practise regularly.
Create regularly.
The more you do something, the more naturally it begins to come to you.
6. Develop Your Own Style
Learning from others is important, but eventually, you need to discover your own voice.
What makes your work yours?
Your perspective.
Your personality.
Your way of communicating.
Your creativity.
People should eventually be able to see your work and recognise that it came from you.
7. Keep Learning
The world changes.
Trends change.
Technology changes.
What worked five years ago may not work today.
Being excellent means staying curious.
Take courses.
Read.
Watch tutorials.
Experiment.
Learn new techniques.
Never become so good that you stop learning.
8. Be Patient With Yourself
This is perhaps the hardest part.
You may look at someone else's work and wonder why they are already successful while you are still struggling.
Don't let comparison make you quit.
You are seeing their results, not all the years that produced them.
Keep going.
Keep improving.
Keep showing up.
Because becoming the best at your craft isn't about waking up one morning and suddenly being extraordinary.
It is about becoming 1% better repeatedly until the difference becomes impossible to ignore.
Talent may open the door.
But discipline, consistency, curiosity and patience are what keep you in the room.
Don't just aim to be good at what you do. Aim to become so good that your work speaks for you even when you're not in the room.
