FRSC Takes Road Safety Enlightenment To Church, Communities In Anambra - 2 days ago

The Federal Road Safety Corps, RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command, has intensified its grassroots campaign to curb road crashes by taking its enlightenment drive directly to worship centres and communities across the state.

At St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Umudim Nnewi, officers of the corps held an extensive “Church advocacy programme” aimed at deepening road safety consciousness among worshippers and residents.

Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekauno, told the congregation that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to cut road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths through sustained public education and community engagement.

She explained that the corps is focusing on practical, everyday behaviours that often lead to avoidable tragedies on the road. Topics covered included pedestrian safety, the compulsory use of crash helmets by motorcyclists, the dangers of overloading and mixed loading, and the need for proper traffic management by all road users.

Asekauno also warned against driving against traffic, commonly known as one-way driving, describing it as a reckless habit that frequently results in fatal head-on collisions. She highlighted the growing problem of underage driving and stressed that speeding and dangerous driving remain leading causes of crashes in Anambra and beyond.

Addressing the worshippers, she urged motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians to embrace a culture of safety and act as ambassadors of responsible road use within their communities. Road safety, she noted, is a shared responsibility that demands consistent vigilance and respect for traffic regulations.

The officiating priest, Rev Father Daniel Ileka, commended the FRSC for bringing the campaign to the church, describing the visit as timely and impactful. He offered prayers for the corps and pledged the church’s continued support in spreading road safety messages among parishioners.

Ileka also appealed to the Sector Commander to establish a Special Marshal Unit in the parish to further entrench road safety values and assist the corps in its enforcement and enlightenment efforts.

The event drew more than 1,500 worshippers and community members and was attended by the Unit Commander, RS5.32 Nnewi Unit Command, senior officers and Special Marshals. Participants received flyers and other educational materials, while an interactive session allowed them to ask questions and seek clarifications on specific road safety concerns.

The programme ended with a thanksgiving session by the FRSC team, reinforcing the growing partnership between the corps and faith-based organisations in the drive to make Anambra’s roads safer.
