The Borno State Police Command has disbursed more than ₦20.1 million to the families of nine officers who died in the line of duty, in a move authorities say underscores the Force’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their dependents.
The payment, totalling ₦20,137,770.34, was made under the Nigeria Police Force Group Life Insurance Scheme and handed to next-of-kin and other designated beneficiaries of the deceased officers at a formal cheque presentation ceremony in Maiduguri.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Nahum Daso, the initiative was coordinated by the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, as part of ongoing efforts to provide financial relief to families left vulnerable after losing their breadwinners in service to the nation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Ibrahim Sumaila, represented the Commissioner at the event and conveyed the message of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to the beneficiaries.
He stressed that the welfare of officers, both serving and deceased, remains a central pillar of the current police leadership, describing the Group Life Insurance Scheme as a practical demonstration of institutional responsibility and compassion.
Sumaila said the scheme was designed to honour officers who paid the ultimate price in the pursuit of peace and security, while cushioning the economic shock experienced by their families. He urged recipients to manage the funds wisely, prioritising education, healthcare, and long-term stability.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Modu Ishaku expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police and the Borno Command, noting that the support would help families rebuild their lives and secure a better future for the children of the deceased officers.
The latest disbursement follows an earlier payout by the same command, when about ₦18.38 million was shared among nine other families of fallen personnel under the same insurance framework.
The Group Life Assurance Scheme is a nationwide initiative of the Nigeria Police Force, structured to provide financial support to dependents of officers who die while serving. Police authorities say the programme is part of broader reforms aimed at boosting morale within the ranks and reinforcing the message that the sacrifices of officers will not be forgotten once their service ends in tragedy.
