In the commercial hub of Dar es Salaam and beyond, protesters have clashed with security forces following the Oct. 29 general election in Tanzania. Many demonstrators are accusing the government of orchestrating a one sided vote after the country’s two major opposition figures were barred from running.

The ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), appears poised to retain power, further fuelling anger among youthful protesters who call the process a“sham.”
Authorities responded by imposing a nighttime curfew, shutting down internet access and deploying the military alongside the police. Tear gas and gunfire were used to disperse protesters, and at least two people, one civilian and one police officer have died, according to rights groups. Business operations and travel in affected areas, particularly near roads and airports, have been disrupted.
