Venezuela's interim government declared a state of emergency on Wednesday after two powerful earthquakes, followed by more than 20 aftershocks, struck the country and disrupted major infrastructure.
Authorities announced the closure of Maiquetia International Airport near Caracas after the facility suffered significant structural damage. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, caused widespread destruction, with several buildings collapsing in the capital city.
By Thursday, the interim president reported that the twin quakes had claimed 32 lives and left over 700 people injured. The powerful tremors triggered panic across affected areas, forcing residents to flee as structures crumbled.
