An app has been created for people who aren't having sex. The app was made to help a community of people whom the creator believes are "not represented enough." The app was launched by Shakia Seabrook and named "The Sexless Tribe. "
The app has already been downloaded over 8,000 times, although it's still in beta mode.
Shakia adds that despite having Christian beliefs, her abstinence isn’t entirely centred on her religion and that her app is open to the public and not exclusively Christians. "All are welcome, I didn’t create it for Christians, I created it for anyone who's living this lifestyle," she adds.
The app came about in the year 2020 after she discovered a need for an online community. She said, "There's not space enough for people to come together and get the help they desire to be successful in living this lifestyle, so I rose to the challenge."
The app consists of two parts: a resource space with materials on abstinence and a community where users can interact, a bit similar to a dating app. Also, there are events hosted in the app every month via zoom. An encouraging quote is sent to subscribers phones and they get a late night check-in for accountability.
Shakia adds that she reserves no judgement against people who don't choose abstinence saying "I feel like in orde to make an informed decision with anything you have to be informed of all the options and I think the time that the time we're living in there's only one option being pushed and that's sex."
She added that there's a different option, and she loves being able to allow people to see that and make a difference
